Public Art Discussion

Q Public Art in the 21st Century 1010 unread replies.1010 replies. Public Art in the 21st Century One of the themes of 21st century art that we have studied is making art public—taking art out of the museums (or not even putting your art in a museum at all) and displaying art publicly, democratically, where everyone would have the opportunity to experience it. So, for this discussion....Pretend.... You are a city commissioner in charge of community and culture. You have been given a large budget and a designated space outside in downtown Orlando, easily visible to the public. Your assignment is to choose a work of 21st century art (from this module) to display in that space. Your purchase will become a permanent display, so keep that in mind as well as the fact that people of all ages and ethnicities will see this art. You can choose an installation, sculpture, or 2-dimensional work of art. Note: you may choose a work by any of the artists mentioned in this module only. The website titled An artist a day (Links to an external site.) also presents many contemporary works of art from which you may choose. Your Response should tell us the following: • What criteria do you think are important to consider when choosing this work of art? Explain each criterion and why you consider it important. o (Are size or color, or message, artist background, etc. criteria you should consider in making your choice?) o (Is it important that the majority of people like the work of art? Is it important that the work of art provoke a reaction from the public?) • What goal/goals would you like to achieve by displaying this work of art publicly? o (Would your goal be to inform the public, or to inspire, shock, please the public? Would one of your goals be to boast of Orlando’s positive aspects or to demonstrate that Orlando is a sophisticated city?) NEXT: Tell us the following • What work of art do you choose? • Why did you choose this work? • How do you think the public will react to the work of art that you chose? • How will you respond to people who do not like the arts? Please copy and paste a picture of the work of art in your post. For your responses to each others’ posts, focus on learning from each others’ choices and thoughts, and consider whether you believe tax-payers’ dollars should be spent on that work of art.

Chosen Artwork: “Book of Life” Artist Name: David Kracov I considered the look and the message delivered by the artwork while choosing it. That is what will make it worthy of selection. The colours used are so vibrant that I guess they will attract more people to the place.
